Why the same salary pays differently by state
Federal income tax and FICA are the same no matter where you live, but state income tax is not. Nine states take nothing from your wages, while others reach into double digits at higher incomes. That means an identical salary can leave you with thousands of dollars more — or less — depending only on your state.
Don't forget cost of living
A no-income-tax state isn't automatically the better deal. States often recover revenue through higher sales or property taxes, and housing costs vary enormously. Use this comparison for the tax picture, then weigh rent, housing and everyday costs on top.
