How overtime pay works
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), most hourly (non-exempt) employees must be paid at least 1.5× their regular ratefor hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek — commonly called "time and a half." Some employers or states offer double time (2×) for holidays or very long shifts.
Overtime is calculated weekly
Federal overtime is based on a single workweek, not per day. Working more than 8 hours in a day doesn't trigger federal overtime unless your weekly total passes 40 hours — though a few states (like California) do have daily overtime rules.
